Japanese automaker Toyota has just issued a decidedly laconic press release announcing the unveiling at the Detroit Auto Show of a small, battery-powered, electric vehicle, the FT-EV, set to hit markets in early 2010. The vehicle, which no one has seen yet, is reportedly inspired from the diminutive subcompact, four-seat iQ sedan presented at the Geneva Auto Show.

A still-unnamed prototype shown here with a digital illustration was spotted for the first time this past summer and based on all the photos accumulated (as well as a few knowledgeable sources), we are speculating - contrary to the camouflaged disguise - that this will have so-called coupe-like styling (similar to BMW's X6).

Next-Generation Porsche 911 Spied!

These crystal-clear shots show the next-generation Porsche 911, internally called the 998. Earlier stories in some media reported that this prototype was the 911 Turbo. However these pictures clearly show that the side air-intakes in front of the rear wheels are fakes, and so is the huge rear wing, which hides the shape of the smaller spoiler of a standard 911s.

Volvo to study driving behaviour

Well known for the safety of its automotive vehicles, Swedish manufacturer Volvo will conduct a study to compile a variety of data on driving behaviour in specific situations. For the FOT research project, part of the EuroFOT project established by the SAFER research center, the automaker will equip some 100 Volvo V70s and XC70s with cameras and computers.

A group of 50 journalists from across Canada and the U.S. voted among 14 cars and 11 trucks, which had to be new-generation or feature substantial modifications. It seems like a tough battle between the Dodge Ram and the Ford F-150, both totally redesigned for 2009. The latest round in the head-to-head grudge match goes to the F-150 for claiming Motor Trend Magazine's "Truck of the Year" honours. At the end of October, the Ram outscored the Ford by a small margin to become the AJAC's "Best New Pickup Truck" for 2009.

It's not Porsche's first record, but this time a 911 Carrera has distinguished itself in a whole new arena. Following the inspection of the German DEKRA Car Inspection Authority and the sealing of the fuel tank and engine compartment, the car travelled 648 kilometres while maintaining an average fuel consumption rating of 6.7 litres per 100 km.
